Working for a better deal for disadvantaged communities
If you’re really committed to working in creative media, then that’s a good start. The truth is it’s very competitive. Here are some tips to help get you started
Think about what you actually want to do first. For example, if you want to work in post production then there are specific courses that could help you. The level of course you take will depend on the type of job you want. Doing well on your course is important but it won’t guarantee you work. Experience workers have said there are 3 main things that will help you to find work:
1. Relevant Skills
This will come with a good qualification
2. Work Experience
Not easy to get when you’re starting out but you should be getting involved with projects where you can learn from others and develop your skills. It could be that you look for a community group, find some likeminded people or participate in projects at your school or college.
3. Networks
Many forget about this one. It’s not always what you know but who you know will be just as important. Many get their first breaks from friends and family members. You will have to network and get to know as many people as possible. Chances are, the broader your network the more likely you are to secure work.
So, develop your networking skills, be approachable, be persistent, and be prepared to take rejection, be willing to learn at every opportunity and BE PRO ACTIVE. If you’re expecting everything to automatically come to you, then think again. The creative media sector is not for you. It’s very competitive, constantly changing and workers have to be flexible but it’s also growing in size and can be highly rewarding.
